Digital Desk: The nation is remembering Mahatma Gandhi on his 78th Death Anniversary, observed as Martyrs’ Day, or Shaheed Diwas, to honour all freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence and unity. A Sarva-Dharma Prarthana is scheduled to be held at Gandhi Samadhi, Rajghat, in New Delhi today.


Gandhi, aged 78, was assassinated on 30th January , 1948, at 5:17 PM  by Nathuram Godse while on his way to an evening prayer meeting at the Gandhi Smriti, a large mansion in central New Delhi.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the Father of the Nation, saying Gandhi’s call for ‘swadeshi’ remains a guiding principle for a developed India. Posting on X, Modi said, “My tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his death anniversary. His personality and deeds will forever continue to inspire the people of the country to walk the path of duty.”
