After almost two weeks of severe disruption caused by widespread floods, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has successfully restored vital rail connectivity across several parts of Upper Assam. As a critical precautionary measure, the railway authority has announced that only diesel locomotive-hauled trains will initially operate on these reopened sections.
This decision stems from significant humanitarian concerns and a paramount focus on public safety, particularly for flood-affected residents who continue to seek shelter along railway tracks. Railway officials stated that the temporary use of diesel locomotives aims to minimise the risk of electrocution until the flood situation normalises and conditions are deemed safe for all types of operations.
Before resuming services, NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava conducted a thorough inspection of the flood-affected areas, meticulously examining tracks, bridges, and other essential railway infrastructure. During his assessment, it was observed that numerous local residents, including children, along with their belongings and livestock, were still taking refuge on or in close proximity to the railway tracks due to the prevailing flood conditions.
The restoration of the rail link, which includes connectivity through districts like Sivasagar, is a significant step towards normalising transport in the region. The NFR's measured approach underscores a commitment to balancing operational resumption with the immediate safety needs of the vulnerable population impacted by the recent deluges.
