In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, India's Mohammed Ashfaq has rewritten the national U20 record books, storming into the men's 400m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 held in Eugene. The 19-year-old sprinter's exceptional performance has brought significant attention to the Indian contingent at the global event.
Ashfaq initially clocked an impressive 45.81 seconds in Heat 5, securing a second-place finish and comfortably qualifying for the semi-finals. This timing not only propelled him forward but also surpassed his own U20 national record of 46.05 seconds, which he had set earlier this April at the U20 Federation Cup in Bengaluru. Maintaining his stellar form, Ashfaq continued to impress in semi-final Heat 3, where he finished third with a time of 46.00 seconds, ensuring his coveted spot in the championship final.
While Ashfaq's achievement stands out, other Indian athletes experienced mixed results. In the same 400m event, compatriot Piyush Raj finished fifth in Heat 6 with a time of 47.78 seconds, unfortunately missing out on a final berth. In the men’s high jump, Basant successfully cleared 2.14m, securing fifth place in qualification Group A and earning a spot in the final. However, K. Ambriesh could not advance, finishing 12th in Group B with a best jump of 2.05m; notably, no athlete in either group managed to clear the automatic qualification mark of 2.21m. The women’s shot put saw Anshu register a best throw of 15.24m, falling just 21cm short of the final qualification cutoff, placing her ninth in Group A and 14th overall. Further disappointment struck Tanu Chaudhary in the women’s 400m hurdles, where she finished fifth in her heat, failing to progress to the next round.
