Digital desk: In a terror funding case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) demanded the death penalty for convicted Kashmiri separatist and chief of the proscribed Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Yasin Malik, according to news agency PTI. Malik was found guilty by a Delhi court last week after pleading guilty in 2017 to allegations of terror funding, propagating terrorism, and secessionist operations in Kashmir.

The agency presented its case to special judge Praveen Singh, while an amicus curiae assigned by the court to represent Malik requested life in jail as the minimum penalty. The court's decision on the length of Malik's sentence is likely later today.

Today, a special NIA court will decide the length of sentence to be handed out to Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik in the 2017 J&K terror funding case. The NIA has demanded that the JKLF leader be executed. Meanwhile, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has condemned Yasin Malik's sentence. Imran Khan, who openly supports Yasin Malik, was chastised in a tweet.

Malik had told the court that he was not contesting the charges, which included sections 16 (terrorist act), 17 (fundraising for terrorist act), 18 (conspiracy to commit terrorist act), and 20 (member of terrorist gang or organisation) of the UAPA, as well as sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 124-A (sedition) of the IPC.

A spontaneous shutdown has taken place in sections of Srinagar ahead of the judgement. According to PTI, security troops have been deployed in the city to prevent any law and order issues.

According to PTI, most stores and business institutions in Maisuma and surrounding regions, including several in Lal Chowk, were closed.

Some shops in the old city were also closed, although public transportation was running regularly, they noted.
