They eloped and married lawfully on May 14 after their separate families refused to approve of their courtship. The following day, the couple married in a nearby temple.

Digital Desk: A 31-year-old Bengali lad from Malkangiri district in Odisha committed himself nine days after marrying a 20-year-old tribal girl, according to his family, after a village council was conducted in the girl's community to decide if the marriage was genuine or not.

Doctors at the Malkangiri district headquarters hospital declared the youth, a mason from the MV-9 village, one of the 216 villages in Malkangiri district where Bengali immigrants have relocated, dead on Monday morning.

According to family relatives, the deceased was in love with the 21-year-old female. They eloped and married lawfully on May 14 after their separate families refused to approve of their courtship. The following day, the couple married in a nearby temple.

"On May 16, the girl's family members arrived at her Bengali home and whisked her away to her hamlet of Boilapari under the excuse that her mother was ill. She was expected to return to her husband's house, approximately a kilometre away, that evening, but she did not. "The girl's family kept postponing her return for a few days until they announced a village assembly on May 20 would decide the destiny of the marriage," said the deceased's brother-in-law.

A conference of almost 200 Koya tribals conducted on May 20 could not decide whether or not to allow the tribal girl to stay with the Bengali lad, but she was not allowed to meet him. The child was so upset that he attempted suicide on Sunday afternoon. The boy's condition had deteriorated by the time the family discovered him, according to his brother-in-law.

"The girl was mercilessly battered by her family for admitting to making a mistake in front of the kangaroo court." The couple had met with the inspector of Malkangiri police station the day following their wedding to discuss security. The inspector advised them that because they were both majors, they could make their own marital decisions.

An unnatural death complaint has been filed in this matter, according to Malkangiri police station inspector Rigan Kindo. However, he stated that the boy's family has not filed any charges against the girl's family members.
