Digital Desk: Former Union minister and well-known economist Yoginder K. Alagh passed away today after a prolonged illness, his family said.

According to his son Munish Alagh, 83-year-old Mr. Alagh was an emeritus professor at the Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Research in this city and had been experiencing health issues for some time.

Y K Alagh was raised in Rajasthan and was educated at the University of Rajasthan. He was born in Chakwal, modern-day Pakistan, in 1939. From the University of Pennsylvania, he received his doctorate in economics.

It may be mentioned that he also served as vice chancellor at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. During the years 1996 to 1998, he served as the Union's state minister of power, science, and technology.
