MANGALDAI: The carcass of a full-grown male one-horned rhinoceros was recovered on the morning of July 31 from Kawoitoli Char in the Brahmaputra river, situated within the jurisdiction of Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR).
Wildlife officials located the deceased rhino at approximately 10:15 am. During the initial examination conducted at the site, authorities confirmed that the animal's horn was intact, and no immediate signs suggesting foul play were observed. This finding is a relief for conservationists, as poaching for rhino horn remains a significant threat to the species.
A necropsy was promptly carried out on the same day. Following the examination, the horn was carefully collected, and its raw weight was recorded as 1.120 kg. According to Pradipta Barua, the Field Director of ONPTR and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), the preliminary assessment points towards old age as the probable cause of the rhinoceros's death.
