Since early this month, Korora, the indigenous term for the small critters, has begun washing up dead on New Zealand beaches.

Digital Desk: More than 500 of the world's smallest penguins have inexplicably washed up dead on beaches across New Zealand in the last several months.

Scientists and experts have been unable to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem; nonetheless, many feel that climate change played a key role in the extinction of these cute penguins.

Since early this month, Korora, the indigenous term for the small critters, has begun washing up dead on New Zealand beaches.

According to The Guardian, over 500 people were discovered dead on the beach in early May. According to reports, the tiny penguins are significantly lighter than they should be.

"There was just no body fat on them, there was scarcely any muscle to show," said DOC seabird biologist Graeme Taylor. “When they reach that point of emaciation, they are unable to dive, which leads them to starve or succumb to hypothermia due to the lack of a protective coat of blubber," he added.
