A large number of minority workers returning from outside the state have gathered in their hometowns
Digital Desk: A massive rush has been witnessed in trains across the state ahead of the Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026. Heavy crowds were particularly seen at Lumding Railway Station, especially on the Avadh Assam Express, as voters travel to their hometowns to exercise their franchise.
A large number of minority workers returning from outside the state have gathered in Nagaon, heading towards areas like Dhing, Rupahihat, Samaguri, and Laharighat to cast their votes.
Taking advantage of the transport shortage, some unscrupulous operators are charging exorbitant fares, ranging from Rs00 to Rs700 for trips that usually cost around Rs50. Several workers have urged the Election Commission of India to arrange adequate transport facilities to ensure they can vote without difficulty.
Meanwhile, in Jalukbari, known as the gateway to the Northeast, passengers are facing severe hardship due to fare hikes and lack of vehicles. Despite waiting for hours, many are unable to find transport. With buses in short supply, travellers heading towards Dhubri and Goalpara are to board trucks, while the few available buses are charging sky-high fares.
