New Delhi: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, on Sunday, in a function, said that threats to human rights and bodily harm are the highest in police stations and also raised concerns about torture in police custody. Adding human rights and dignity, “sacrosanct” and custodial torture and police brutality problems still prevalent in our society, Justice Ramana suggested awareness among the cops.
He also said that as per some recent records, even the privileged are given third-degree treatments.
Addressing an event organized by NALSA (National Legal Services Authority) at Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan he said, “dissemination of information about the constitutional right to legal aid and availability of free legal aid services" was the way ahead to keep track of police excesses.
Display Boards and outdoor hoardings should be installed, in every police station or prison, and NALSA should carry out nationwide sensitization of police officers, said Justice Ramana.
To remain as a society, governed by law, we need to shorten the gap of accessibility to justice between the most vulnerable and highly privileged. For the times to come, we must not forget that the realities of socio-economic diversity, which exists in our country, can never be a reason for denial of rights, he said at the launch of a legal services app.
