Digital Desk : A tragic incident unfolded in Pune on Sunday afternoon as an old iron bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed near Kundamala in Maval tehsil, claiming one life and leaving several feared swept away. The collapse occurred around 3:30 PM, during the peak hours of this weekend, which had caused a great deal of tourists to flock to the vicinity.
As per reports, Talegaon Dabhade police station officers reported that three people have already been rescued, while one is confirmed dead. “Preliminary information indicates that several individuals were on the bridge when it gave way,” said a police official.
The 30-year-old iron bridge was one of the most popular tourist attractions in the town collapsed as it was occupied by 100 people at the time of the event. Maval MLA Sunil Shelke even said that some people fell into the river, but they have been able to swim to safety. Others remain unaccounted for.
Rescue operations were launched immediately. The response to the emergency was quick by local police and also the employees of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate. They have also dispatched two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to facilitate the search and rescue efforts.
Responding to the accident, NCP leader Supriya Sule has angrily criticised. She said, “It is feared that some citizens may have been swept away. I have spoken to the Pune District Collector, and all necessary help is being provided. This is a very unfortunate incident,”.
Moreover, she urged people to be careful during monsoon and directed them to safety codes of conduct, especially when they are visiting dangerous tourist attraction places.
The rescue efforts are being carried on, and the situation is under close observation of the authorities. The event has raised new fears relating to the safety of deteriorating infrastructure in tourist-heavy areas
