The IIT-B went up from 172 to 149 in the global rankings this year, marking the first time it has been ranked...


Digital Desk: According to officials here on Wednesday, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has broken into the world's top 150 universities and topped India rankings in the 2018 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, UK.


The IIT-B went up from 172 to 149 in the global ranking this year, marking the first time it has been ranked among the Top 150, with an overall score of 51.7/100. 


Over time, it has improved its performance by 23 places, and in the 2024 edition, it was ranked among the top 10% of the world's top 1,500 universities.


This is the first time in eight years that an Indian higher education institution has made the top 10%; in 2016, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, was placed 147th.


While the IIT-B has increased, the IISc has decreased from 155 to 225, the IIT-Delhi has decreased from 174 to 197, the IIT-Kanpur has decreased from 264 to 278, and the IIT-Madras has decreased from 250 to 285. The IIT-Guwahati has increased from 384 to 364, while the IIT-Roorkee has remained at 369.


The IIT-B received an impressive score of 81.9 for employer reputation, 73.1 for citation per faculty, 55.5 for academic reputation, 47.4 for employment outcome, 54.9 for sustainability, 18.9 for faculty-student ratio, 4.7 for international faculty, and 8.5 for international students, all out of a possible 100.


Among these nine characteristics, IIT-B had the best employer reputation, with a world rating of 69.
