The victims further alleged that offensive stereotypes were used during the exchange
Digital Desk: Three women from Arunachal Pradesh have alleged racial harassment in Malviya Nagar following a minor dispute over air-conditioner repair work that reportedly escalated into verbal abuse and discriminatory remarks.
According to the complainants, the incident occurred on 19th February at around 4 p.m. in their residential building in South Delhi. Drilling work was underway in their fourth-floor flat as part of an air-conditioner repair when dust and small debris allegedly fell onto the lower floors. Residents on the first floor reportedly objected to the disturbance and raised concerns over the noise and falling particles.
What began as a complaint over drilling soon turned into a heated argument. The women claimed that instead of resolving the issue amicably, a neighbour allegedly mocked the repair worker and made racially insensitive and derogatory remarks directed at them and people from the Northeastern region.
The victims further alleged that offensive stereotypes were used during the exchange, including comments questioning the character and profession of Northeastern women. They described the remarks as discriminatory, insulting, and deeply hurtful.
Personnel from the Delhi Police reportedly reached the spot after the situation escalated. Formal procedures were carried out at the scene.
The women also alleged that shortly after the incident, the building broker informed them that they would have to vacate the flat within two months, citing upcoming construction work. However, they claimed that other residents were unaware of any such planned construction.
The complainants have demanded a formal apology from the accused neighbour, stating that the apology should be extended not only to them but also to the entire Northeastern community, as the alleged remarks targeted people from the region as a whole.
The incident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns over racial discrimination and prejudice faced by individuals from India’s Northeastern states in metropolitan cities.
