During Ramadan, Muslims observe fasts from dawn to sunset and engage in increased prayer and spiritual reflection
Digital Desk: Ramzan fasts will commence on Thursday, 19th February , 2026, across India after the crescent moon marking the beginning of the holy month was sighted in various parts of the country on Wednesday evening.
The announcement confirming the start of Ramadan 1447 Hijri was made following the official sighting of the moon in Kolkata. With the declaration, the first sehri (pre-dawn meal) will be observed at 4:45 am, while the first iftar (breaking of the fast) is scheduled for 5:40 pm.
Naib Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Shaban Bukhari, also confirmed the moon sighting and the commencement of the fasting month.
During Ramadan, Muslims observe fasts from dawn to sunset and engage in increased prayer and spiritual reflection. A special nightly prayer known as Taraweeh is offered in mosques, during which the Holy Quran is recited over the course of the month until the sighting of the Eid moon.
Mufti Mukarram has appealed to the Muslim community to pray for the well-being and prosperity of the country’s 140 crore citizens during the holy month.
Ramadan will conclude after 29 or 30 days, depending on the next crescent moon sighting. The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr will then be celebrated with congregational prayers, new clothes, festive meals, and acts of charity.
As the holy month begins, the focus now shifts to the first fast, the first iftar, and the first Taraweeh — marking a period of spiritual renewal and devotion observed by millions across the nation.
