Digital Desk: Former Ministry of Heavy Industries secretary Arun Goel, who chose voluntary retirement service (VRS) six weeks before retiring, was named Election Commissioner on Saturday. 

"The President is pleased to introduce Shri Arun Goel, IAS (Retd.) (PB: 1985) as Election Commissioner in the Election Commission with effect from the date he enters office," stated the Union Law and Justice Ministry in a statement.

The vacancy of one Election Commissioner in the three-member Commission has been unoccupied since May 15, when former Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar took over as Chief Election Commissioner following the retirement of Sushil Chandra. 

Mr. Goel was the Secretary, Culture Ministry, and Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority until being selected as the Heavy Industries Secretary in 2019.
