Digital Desk: Rohan Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri teamed up in the Davis Cup's third game that was scheduled for Sunday. India gained a 2-1 lead over Morocco in the Davis Cup when Bopanna and Bhambri defeated Benchetrit and Laaroussi in a match that ended in scores of 6-2, 6-1.
Rohan's illustrious Davis Cup career, which began with his first appearance in the competition in 2003, concludes with this match.
"Emotional moment coming up for me, playing my last Davis Cup in Lucknow this weekend. It's going to be all over after 21 years, but I have to do it," stated Bopanna ahead of the match.
The 43-year-old has had a remarkable career; most recently, he broke the record for the oldest player to ever make it to a Grand Slam final.
Sasikumar Mukund, a member of Team India, lost to Yassine Dlimi in addition to Bopanna/Bhambri's triumph because the Indian tennis player had to quit due to cramps. That, in addition to Lucknow's humidity, rendered him unable to continue. Sumit Nagal, India's top-ranked singles player, defeated Adam Moundir 6-3, 6-3 to help his country draw the Cup match after Morocco had taken an early 1-0 lead.
India must now win one of the final two games after Bopanna's triumph. Sumit Nagal will face Yassine Dilmi in one of the reverse singles matches, and Sasikumar Mukund will face Adam Moundir.
India has been relegated to World Cup Group 2, its lowest ranking in the competition since the Davis Cup format change that took place in 2019, and a win against Morocco will see them progress to the knockout rounds.
