Digital Desk: Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Friday that strongly condemns Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and calls for its soldiers to be withdrawn immediately.
The motion, which the United States and Albania co-wrote, received 11 of the council’s 15 votes in favour; however, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates abstained from it.
The resolution was also failed due to Moscow’s veto power as a permanent member of the council.
Nonetheless, the debate provided a significant opportunity for the chamber to express its displeasure with President Vladimir Putin’s decision to begin a full-scale operation against Russia’s neighbour.
After the vote, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said, “Let me make one thing clear. Russia you can veto this resolution, but you can’t veto our voices, you can’t veto the truth, you can’t veto our beliefs, and you can’t veto the people of Ukraine.”
Russia, which currently holds the rotating Security Council president, will almost certainly face a vote in the UN General Assembly on a similar resolution, which may pass by a large margin but would be non-binding.
“Russia is, without a doubt, isolated. It opposes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” said Barbara Woodward, the British ambassador to the United Nations.
On the other hand, before the vote, Thomas-Greenfield quoting the attack as “so audacious, so blatant,” said, “It threatens our international order as we know it.”
“It is our solemn duty not to look aside... At the very least, we have a responsibility to object,” she stated.
