In a display of top-tier tennis, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and two-time champion Jessica Pegula both secured their progression to the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open. Sabalenka, known for her powerful game, defeated Shuai Zhang in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, marking another significant milestone in her impressive season.

Sabalenka's victory further solidifies her position as a formidable force on hard courts, improving her season record to an outstanding 25-1 on the surface. This achievement makes her the fastest player to reach 25 hard-court wins in a single season since tennis legend Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2016. Despite the straight-sets scoreline, Zhang consistently challenged the top seed, even holding a break point in the final game before Sabalenka decisively won the last three points to close out the match. This win extends Sabalenka's head-to-head record against Zhang on the WTA Tour to 5-1, with all five victories coming in straight sets.

Meanwhile, American star Jessica Pegula also navigated her way into the next round, overcoming Kamilla Rakhimova with a commanding 6-4, 6-0 win. Her match faced a brief delay due to rainfall, but Pegula maintained her focus to secure the victory. This marks Pegula’s third match in four days, with her only break being a travel day, a demanding schedule that she reportedly viewed with a positive outlook despite the minimal preparation time.

Looking ahead, Aryna Sabalenka is set to face No. 16 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in what promises to be a closely contested match, given Sabalenka's narrow 5-4 lead in their previous encounters. Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, will prepare to take on Diana Shnaider as she continues her campaign in the Ontario capital.
