Digital Desk: A top official stated on Tuesday that Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has been charged with sedition and other offences for penning an offensive essay against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the party mouthpiece 'Saamana'.


According to the source, the FIR was filed after the BJP's Yavatmal district coordinator Nitin Bhutada filed a complaint against the Rajya Sabha member, who is also the executive editor of Saamana.


Sanjay Raut retaliated by accusing the BJP of "censorship."


Nitin Bhutada alleged in his complaint On December 10, Sanjay Raut published the offensive article.


According to the official, the case was registered on Monday at the Umarkhed police station in Yavatmal under sections 124 (A) (sedition), 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc) and 505 (2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between classes) of the Indian Penal Code.


"We have registered a case based on the complaint and will conduct a probe," a spokesperson said.


The rule on sedition, which provides for a maximum prison term of life under section 124A of the IPC for inciting "disaffection towards the government," was incorporated into the penal code in 1890, 57 years before Independence and about 30 years after the IPC was enacted.
