Digital Desk: A five-day-old newborn baby was wrongly administered five vaccines, instead of one, by a nurse at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Palakkad district of Kerala. After receiving an excessive dose of the vaccine, the child has been admitted to the district hospital.

According to reports, the incident took place on Wednesday when the parents took their child to the PHC Pirayiri to get the Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine for tuberculosis.

The child was given the Pentavalent Vaccine (for five life-threatening diseases), the Rotavirus vaccine, the Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (IPV), Pneumococcal Vaccine (PCV), Oral Poliovirus Vaccine (OPV).

Noticing this, the parents went to the doctor and highlighted the issue.

The nurse who gave the vaccines was suspended by the authorities as a result of the parent's complaint. An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the District Medical Officer.

The child is being under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Palakkad District Hospital after developing a fever following the vaccination.
