Ajinkya Rahane’s partnership with Musheer Khan made 43 runs. However, Iyer couldn’t stop Tamil Nadu and was clean-bowled very soon.

Digital desk: Shreyas Iyer's return to the Mumbai team for the Ranji Trophy stands to be a nightmare, managing only 3 runs off 8 balls against Tamil Nadu pacer Sandeep Warrier on Sunday. The match took place at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy (BKC) in Mumbai.

Ajinkya Rahane’s partnership with Musheer Khan made 43 runs. However, Iyer couldn’t stop Tamil Nadu and was clean-bowled very soon.

Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opted not to give Shreyas Iyer a central contract, a decision shared with Ishan Kishan. Iyer's absence from the central contract list followed his participation in the England series, where he featured in the initial two matches before being sidelined for the Rajkot fixture due to complaints of groin and lower back stiffness.

"If Shreyas was to be rested because of injury, the BCCI medical bulletin would have had an update. Since there are no updates, it can be concluded that he has got the axe," the source said.

Reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI) suggested that Iyer's exclusion from the squad was attributed to the absence of detailed information from the cricket board regarding his fitness status.
