Sunil Gavaskar thinks that Axar Patel and Shubman Gill have the potential to become captains of the Indian national cricket team...

Digital Desk: Shubman Gill and Axar Patel will be the thoughtful choices for future Indian Cricket team captaincy, says Sunil Gavaskar. After Virat Kohli stood down as national captain, Rohit was picked as his replacement. But, at the age of 36, Rohit seems no longer getting any younger and is well into the second phase of his remarkable career.

Gavaskar suggested that the Indian selection committee make Axar and Shubman vice captains and "make them think." The veteran has also named Ishan Kishan as one of the candidates after the latter secured his spot on the national squad.

"One is Shubman Gill, and the other is Axar Patel [as future captains] because Axar is improving by leaps and bounds with each match." Giving him the role of vice-captain will force them to think. So, in my opinion, these are the two candidates," Gavaskar explained.

"If there are others, such as Ishan Kishan, once he has established himself in the team. He can be counted in as well," he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named India's Test and One-Day International (ODI) squads for the West Indies tour on Friday, June 23. Ajinkya Rahane, who made his comeback against Australia in the WTC final, was selected as vice-captain for the Indian Squad.

Instead of Rahane, Gavaskar believes India should have named a young player vice-captain for the tour.

"There's nothing wrong with him [Ajinkya Rahane] being the vice-captain, but it's a missed opportunity to develop a young player." Tell a young player that you are being considered for captaincy. As a result, he begins to feel himself as a potential leader," Gavaskar added.
