Digital Desk: The Enforcement division of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has started an intensive campaign against battery-operated e-rickshaws that do not adhere to traffic rules in the city. Most of these vehicles were found speeding and without the required authorisation; to this effect, various batteries of the e-rickshaw had been confiscated

This crackdown follows a resolution adopted by the GMC's Mayor-In-Council (MIC) in 2023, which severely condemned the unlicensed activities of e-rickshaws. Although similar drives have been carried out in the past, this time the GMC is taking a tougher stance.

It has been revealed that some had been renting out hundreds of e-rickshaws every day at 350 rupees each, and earning lakhs of rupees out of the deal in the dark. Most of the drivers hail from districts such as Barpeta and Dhubri, and earnings of the earnings was to support their families.

The GMC has vowed to continue the operation as this would help to maintain the safety of all people and cause orderly traffic within the city.
