The ministry also restored the federation's recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF) for wrestling.

Digital Desk: The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports lifted the ban on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), giving full control of the sports body to Sanjay Singh, the close aide of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was allegedly involved in sexual harassment incidents.

The ministry also restored the federation's recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF) for wrestling.

The ministry had suspended the WFI on December 24, 2023 after the newly elected president Sanjay Singh announced the hosting of the U-15 and U-20 nationals at Nandini Nagar in the Gonda district, Uttar Pradesh.

Following the lifting of the ban on WFI, former president Brij Bhushan Singh condemned the wrestlers and politicians for protesting against the federation.

Several top Indian wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, protested against WFI and Brij Bhushan, alleging him of sexual harassment. In August 2023, United World Wrestling (UWW) banned WFI for failing to organise an election within a stipulated time.
