The Sri Lankan PM said in a statement that the decision was made, as the nation's petroleum distribution is scheduled to resume this week.

Digital Desk: Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, has announced that he will step down from his position to assure the survival of the government and the security of all residents.

Wickremesinghe tweeted, “To ensure the continuation of the Government including the safety of all citizens I accept the best recommendation of the Party Leaders today, to make way for an All-Party Government. To facilitate this I will resign as Prime.

The Sri Lankan PM said in a statement that the decision was made, as the nation's petroleum distribution is scheduled to resume this week.

The Director of the World Food Program will also visit the nation next week, and the IMF's Debt Sustainability study is about to be completed.

The statement said, "He is agreeable to this request of the Opposition Party Leaders in order to ensure the safety of the public."

The Speaker would take over as President for a maximum of 30 days, according to the Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva, who also reported that the majority party leaders have approved the resignation of the President and the Prime Minister.

The interim government will be made up of members from all parties, he added.
