The inauguration of the Sela Tunnel aligns with the larger vision of the Modi government to transform the northeastern states.

Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent inauguration of the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh holds immense strategic importance for India's security and regional development. The tunnel, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation for Rs. 825 crore, is now the world's longest twin-lane tunnel, built at over 13,000 feet.

The Sela Tunnel's strategic significance lies in enhancing the movement of soldiers, equipment, and heavy vehicles to forward areas near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector. This strengthens India's military capabilities and improves rapid deployment in this sensitive border region.

Addressing a public gathering in Itanagar, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the tunnel's crucial role in bolstering national security. He criticised previous Congress governments for neglecting the development of the northeastern regions, highlighting how the Sela Tunnel project could have been realised earlier. Modi stated that his government prioritises the nation's necessities over parliamentary seat counts, ensuring a focus on strategic infrastructure development.

The Sela Tunnel, comprising Tunnel 1 (1,003 metres long) and Tunnel 2 (a 1,595-metre twin tube tunnel), stands as a testament to India's commitment to modernising border infrastructure. In addition to facilitating military movements, the tunnel is expected to contribute significantly to the region's socio-economic development by improving connectivity.

The inauguration of the Sela Tunnel aligns with the larger vision of the Modi government to transform the northeastern states. The slew of projects launched, totalling nearly Rs. 55,000 crores, covers diverse sectors such as rail, road, health, housing, education, border infrastructure, IT, power, oil and gas, and more.
