According to NASA, the 'Strawberry Moon' is also known as the Mead Moon or the HoneyMoon. This will be the first of three supermoons this summer.

Digital Desk:
The world will witness the "Strawberry Moon" today at 7.51 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, which is 5.22 p.m. IST, when the Moon will be at its closest point in its orbit around the Earth. This will cause it to appear as a "supermoon," which will appear larger and brighter to residents of Planet Earth.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the June full moon, known as "Vat Purnima" in India, will appear opposite the Sun in Earth-based longitude on June 14 at 7:52 a.m. EDT (5:22 p.m. IST).

What exactly is Strawberry Moon?
The strawberry moon, on the other hand, does not resemble strawberries! According to NASA, the full moon Strawberry Moon was named by the Algonquin tribes of the United States and Canada after an abundant plant in the area. According to NASA, the 'Strawberry Moon' is also known as the Mead Moon or the HoneyMoon. This will be the first of three supermoons this summer.

The Strawberry Moon is the last full moon of spring or the first full moon of summer in the United States.

Watch Strawberry Moon online
As per news reports, the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy's Ceccano will host a free live stream of the Full Moon on Tuesday. The webcast will begin at 3.15 pm EDT (12.45 am IST). The full moon will peak at nearly 5.22 pm on June 14. However, it will not change its appearance throughout the night, so one can watch it anytime after that.

The relationship between the Full Moon and India
In India, the June Full Moon is known as Vat Purnima, a Hindu festival. According to the legend of Savitri and Satyavan, the former, a devout wife, deceived Yama Raj, the Hindu god of death and justice, into giving her husband new life. As a result, Savitri is worshipped on Vat Purnima. On this day, married women fast and pray for their husband's long life.

What is a supermoon, precisely?
When a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as "perigee," a supermoon occurs. The moon seems larger and brighter than usual during this phase. The Moon reaches its perigee, about 2,26,000 miles from Earth, and its farthest point, or apogee, around 2,51,000 miles beyond Earth during every 27-day orbit around Earth.
This year, according to the Old Farmers' Almanac, there will be six more full moons.
