The students have called for a protest if their demand to change the designated area for Khao Gully is not fulfilled...

Digital Desk: Cotton University students on Wednesday opposed the Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) designation of a 'Khao Gully' area near the university.

The Cotton University Hostels area off Lakshminath Bezbaruah Road, where a few departments are also situated, has been given special designation by the GMC. The university's student union objected to this, claiming that it would undermine Cotton University's studious atmosphere.

The chief minister and GMC have received repeated requests from the students to reconsider their decision to build a "Khao Gully" next to the institution.

The president of Cotton University, Tridib Bhagabati, stated, "Last night we noticed that few persons arrived in 30 to 40 vehicles and set up their businesses on the road near the hostel where a few departments are located that connect it with the main building. After asking, we learned that the GMC Mayor had designated the area to establish "Khao Gully." We would like to ask the government to change the area that was designated or establish a "Khao Gully" in this area and remove the university.

There are various universities in the state nowhere the Khao Gully has been established. This area will be used for either business or education, but not both, he stated.

The students have called for a protest if their demand to change the designated area for Khao Gully is not fulfilled.

He added that “people, including BJYM members, who came to set up their businesses on the road near hostels treated the boarders and students of the hostels badly. He continued, "Even though we have a reputation for arguing over small issues, yesterday we maintained our composure to put a bad name on our institution.”
