For hundreds of years’ communication took place in just a couple of ways, you either sat down and had a conversation with someone or you wrote your thoughts down on a letter and had it delivered to them by courier.

Every year, September 1st is observed as World Letter Writing Day. It is a day to learn about the art of writing letters. The day encourages people worldwide to pick up a pen, grab a piece of paper, and write a letter.

World Letter Writing Day, was established by Richard Simpkin as a tribute to the joy and excitement he felt when a hand-written letter would arrive in his mailbox. Richard Simpkin founded World Letter Writing Day in 2014. The hand-written word came about as a result of a project he was working on, called "Australian Legends", he used to send letters to everyone he considered to be an Australian Legend, to have a personal interview and photography session.

However, in this digital age of text and e-mail, it’s almost unheard of to compose a letter.

According to research, good reasons are there to not to abandon letter-writing altogether.

  • It’s a thoughtful way to communicate with those you love.
  • People who write letters of gratitude feel happier and more satisfied with life.
  • The receiver may treasure the letter for years to come.
  • It’s a great way to strengthen a marriage, friendships, or other meaningful relationship.
  • It can somehow help people to better understand the perspective of the topic.
  • Older friends and relatives will cherish this traditional form of communication.
  • If one has beautiful handwriting, it’s a better way to show one’s penmanship skills.
  • Handwritten letters are more carefully written, with the words you choose.
