Digital Desk: The Indian Air Force (IAF) would transfer one
lakh litres of diesel and petrol to Silchar on Tuesday, according to Assam
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The town of Silchar was flooded on Monday
as a result of heavy rain, prompting the district government to limit vehicular
movement on many highways connecting the town. "On June 21, an IAF special
jet would transport 1 lakh litres of fuel, including diesel and petrol, to
Silchar," Sarma said during a press conference in Diphu, Karbi Anglong.
"The Northeast Frontier Railway has also consented to
run a special relief train," he added, adding that nothing like this has
ever happened in Assam's history. Due to flooding, a 3-kilometer portion of the
Silchar-Kumbhirgram VIP road was closed to all vehicular traffic. Passengers
arriving at the Silchar airport will now be routed via the Lathigram road.
People have been rescued by NDRF and SDRF personnel from various sections of
the districts.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has informed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that an inter-ministerial central team will arrive in Assam shortly to survey the flood damage. Floods have affected 47,72,140 people in 5,424 villages across 32 districts in Assam, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). There are 2,31,819 inmates in 810 relief camps across the state, and seven people have gone missing in the last 24 hours.
