Agartala: Two days after the minor skirmish that broke out between the supporters of Tripura Autonomous District Council of the ruling TIPRA Motha party and Tripura Peoples Front (TPF), the Royal scion of Tripura and chairman of Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) Pradyot Manikya is vouching for a symbol-less polls in the local bodies across the state.

Citing examples of other states, Pradyot Manikya stated that rural body polls are usually conducted without political symbols and the same practice should be implemented in Tripura as well.

“Rural body elections are held without political symbols in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. If they can, then why not in Tripura?” said Manikya.

He has also urged the ruling BJP party to extend their support to his proposal for a smooth flow of development and violence free polls in the rural level.

“If BJP extends its support for this unique system of conducting elections, then village councils in the ADC will be formed in a more reformed, violence-free and democratic way,” Pradyot reiterated.

Meanwhile, the BJP has given no statement on the proposal forwarded by TIPRA Chairman Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma. “The idea of clamping down political violence is a good step but a detailed discussion is needed in this context,” said a BJP spokesperson.
