Digital Desk: Kerala,
which is still reeling from the deaths and hospitalisation of 58 people as a
result of food poisoning, is now dealing with a new unknown disease known as
"tomato flu."
According to local media sources, the ailment, often known as
"tomato fever," has infected more than 80 children. All of the
instances were reported in Kollam.
What is tomato flu, exactly?
This is an uncommon viral infection that produces rashes, skin
irritation, and dehydration. The disease takes its name from the tomato-like
blisters that it creates.
In Kerala, tomato fever is affecting youngsters under the age of five.
The disease's signs and symptoms
Blisters the size of tomatoes and red in colour can appear on the
affected child. Other symptoms, similar to chikungunya, include a high
temperature, bodily discomfort, joint swelling, and weariness.
In the southern state, cases have also been reported from Aryankavu,
Anchal, and Neduvathur.
A medical team is testing those
entering Coimbatore for fever, rashes, and other disease - symptoms of tomato
flu - at Walayar on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border in order to prevent the spread
of tomato flu in one of the districts in neighbouring Kerala.
Two medical officials are leading the
team in checking passengers, particularly youngsters, in all cars.
In addition, a 24-member team has been
organised to inspect children under the age of five in anganwadis.
