Venus Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has received a wild card for the National Bank Open next month, where she will play her first singles match in nearly a year.

Digital Desk: Venus Williams, the former world number one, will make her singles comeback after nearly a year at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto next month, joining her sister Serena.

Venus, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, was given a wild card into the National Bank Open main draw on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old last competed in a singles match in August 2021, when she lost in the first round to Hsieh Su-Wei at the Chicago Women's Open.

Her most recent court appearance came at Wimbledon's mixed doubles tournament, where she and Jamie Murray of Great Britain advanced to the second round.

Serena, Venus' sister and a 23-time major champion, decided to enter the Toronto main draw using her protected ranking, joining Naomi Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion, Iga Swiatek, and U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu.
