Digital Desk: Toyota filed a patent application for a technology that would allow the brand's future electric cars to operate with manual transmissions and clutches. Only two electric vehicles in the world currently utilize this technology. Many drivers love the charm of old-school driving provided by manual transmissions and are interested in retrofitting or converting their internal combustion engine-powered vehicles to electric vehicles. It is convenient for electric cars to have a single gear, which is usually in third or fourth depending on the electric motor's specification and maximum RPMs. This technology is useful for congested highways where changing gears is difficult. The carmaker appears to be working toward combining the old-fashioned charm of a clutch and manual transmission with a zero-emission battery-electric power train. According to the patent drawing and diagrams, the working principle of this technology relies on an electronic controller that makes the electric motor appear like a combustion engine, mimicking an internal combustion engine. However, they might not be essential for driving the vehicle. Instead, they will be inside the car to produce the fun feeling of driving a manual transmission vehicle.
