Guwahati: Tragedy struck Assam State Botanical Garden cum Zoo in Guwahati, after a female giraffe died at around 10:30 pm yesterday.

Zoo officials suspect the giraffe might have died after her head stuck inside the fence in her enclosure while having her meal.

Zoo officials, workers were shocked to find the giraffe dead that was brought from Mysore in 2020 as part of an animal exchange programme.

The giraffe has been sent for post mortem to ascertain the true cause behind her death.

As per sources, two giraffes were brought to Guwahati Zoo from Mysore in 2020, but after one year one of the giraffes died.

Zoo workers have alleged that the giraffe died due to the negligence shown by DFO Ashwini Kumar. Even workers inside the zoo came to know about the death of the animal only lately.

After eight years, the Assam Zoo got three giraffes – one from Patna and two from Mysore. A female giraffe was brought to Assam State Zoo from Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan in Patna two years ago.

The Delhi Central Zoo Authority had approved the exchange programme then.
