"For more than 90 years, the ABC has been and continues to be an independent media organisation, free of political and commercial interests," the organisation claimed.

Digital Desk: Following criticism, Elon Musk's Twitter has now removed the "government-funded media" classification from all accounts belonging to traditional periodicals and digital news outlets.

According to The Verge, Twitter has also removed its website explaining the "government-funded media" classifications.

The microblogging platform previously applied the 'publicly-funded' designation to the BBC account and the 'government-funded' label to the NPR account in the United States.

More 'government-funded media' labels were then applied to the accounts of worldwide news outlets such as ABC Australia, Australia's Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), New Zealand's public broadcaster RNZ, Sweden's SR Ekot and SVT, and Catalonia's TV3.cat.

In a tweet, ABC News stated that it is a publicly financed broadcaster that is "governed by the ABC Charter, which is enshrined in legislation."

"For more than 90 years, the ABC has been and continues to be an independent media organisation, free of political and commercial interests," the organisation claimed.

According to SBS, the branding may mislead Twitter users into believing that the channel is editorially controlled by the government.

"Our journalism is impartial and independent," the CBC/Radio-Canada tweeted.

NPR decided to leave Twitter because Musk's company identified it as a government-funded entity.

Following in the footsteps of NPR, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) departed Twitter after being classified as government-backed media.
