Sunak, the first Indian-origin politician to serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK Cabinet, resigned from Johnson's cabinet earlier this week.

Sunak, who reportedly had a private spat with the prime minister about overspending, went on to say "The public has every right to expect the government to be run properly, competently, and seriously," he added. "I understand that this may be my final ministerial position, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for, which is why I am resigning."

Sunak had previously been praised for his calm response to the economic turmoil caused by the pandemic, but he was chastised after it was revealed that his wife had avoided paying certain taxes in Britain.
