Digital Desk: Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, is urging India to reassess its historical ties with Russia, emphasising that the foundation of their relationship, rooted in the Soviet era, is dissipating.
Kuleba said: “The Chinese-Russian relationship should be of particular attention for India in light of its national security prerogatives.”
During his visit to India, Kuleba expressed concerns over Russia's deepening relationship with China, especially in light of India's unresolved border dispute with its southern neighbour. He highlighted the importance of India standing by Kyiv amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
Despite India's longstanding partnership with Russia, Kuleba underscored the need for India to recognise the changing global landscape and prioritise its national security interests. He pointed out that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has wider implications, urging India to consider the broader strategic implications of its alliances.
Russia, however, has disregarded Ukraine's diplomatic efforts as unviable.
Kuleba also seized the opportunity to promote closer economic ties between Ukraine and India, inviting Indian companies to participate in postwar reconstruction efforts. He emphasised Ukraine's willingness to restore trade relations and explore opportunities for mutual economic benefit, such as importing Indian heavy machinery.
The timing of Kuleba's visit is significant, as Ukraine faces escalating challenges, including military advances by Russian forces and uncertainties regarding US support. However, Kuleba expressed confidence in continued assistance from the United States, regardless of political shifts, highlighting bipartisan support for Ukraine within the US Congress.
