Sunak will succeed Liz Truss, Britain's shortest-serving prime minister.

Penny Mordaunt, the only other candidate failed to persuade Tory MPs for support. Boris Johnson, who was expected to declare his bid for the prime minister post again withdrew from the race late last night.

Sunak was named the next Conservative Party leader by the head of the 1922 Committee of Conservative lawmakers on Monday, putting him on track to become the country's next prime minister. The committee establishes the procedures for selecting and replacing the party's leader.

The new UK Prime Minister was the front-runner after his rival Boris Johnson dropped out, admitting that he couldn't unite their party after one of the most turbulent periods in British political history.
