Guwahati : From Dhubri to Sadiya, the joy of Bhogali Bihu festivity is soaking the entire state into a celebration mood with fish markets flooded with customers ahead of the ‘Uruka Bhooj’. Most of the city fish markets saw an early morning rush, with the usual jingle buzzing in the background “10 kg sitol maas, 21 kg bhokua maas” screaming on top of their voices, the fish vendors exchange greetings of Uruka with their happy customers. With prices ranging from 400-500 to 35,000-40,000; Uruka morning witnesses a festive atmosphere in every corner of the state. Magh of Bhogali Bihu, is a harvest festival of Assam, celebrated by all in unison, in the month of Magh, which falls in mid-January. It is celebrated with the community feasts after the annual harvest. The night before Magh Bihu is observed as the night of feasting, also called ‘Uruka’. People engage in community feasting, make beautiful ‘Bhela Ghars’ in paddy fields and prepare various dishes to be eaten among the family members and with the community people, marking the hardwork and golden produce of their harvesting season. The state government has even eased the Night Curfew restrictions on the occasion of Uruka festivities so that people can enjoy their much loved festival a little more.
