Digital Desk: Expressing her desire to stand by the people of the violent-hit state of Manipur, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has written to the Centre asking permission to visit the northeastern state, a senior official said on Tuesday.

"The chief minister has written to the central government requesting permission to visit Manipur.  She wants to support the victims of violence there," the official told PTI.

According to the official, the Trinamool Congress supremo has been keeping a careful eye on the situation in Manipur.

Last week, Banerjee accused the BJP of attempting to create "Manipur-like conflicts" in West Bengal.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in violence-hit Manipur on Monday night in an effort to bring back peace by hammering out a compromise between conflicting communities.

After a relative respite for several weeks, Manipur, which has been racked by ethnic conflict for about a month, saw an unprecedented increase in disputes and firing between militants and security forces on Sunday.
