Kolkata: West Bengal reported 24,287 new covid-19 cases on Sunday, the greatest single-day increase in the state's history, according to PTI. The number of new cases increased by 29.17 percent, compared to the 18,802 infections reported on Saturday.

According to reports, eighteen fatalities were reported in West Bengal in the last 24 hours due to covid-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 19,901. The current fatality rate in the state is 1.13 percent.

In West Bengal, there are currently 78,111 ongoing covid-19 cases, with 8,213 patients recovering in the last 24 hours. Currently, 5.28 percent of Covid-19 beds in the state are occupied.

On the other hand, there were 8,712 new covid-19 cases in Kolkata, with 1,742 cases in the neighbouring district of Howrah. Hooghly (1,276), South 24 Parganas (1,034), and Paschim Bardhaman (1,007) were among the districts that reported over 1,000 new coronavirus infections.

In Kolkata, the positivity rate of covid-19 stands at 41.93 percent.

The dramatic increase in covid-19 cases in West Bengal comes only weeks before civic elections in Bidhannagar, Chandannagar, Siliguri, and Asansol are scheduled to be held on January 22.

On the other hand, the West Bengal State Election Commission has prohibited huge rallies or road shows. It has enabled a maximum of 500 people to attend political party gatherings in open locations and 200 individuals, or up to 50% of the seating capacity, in halls. The panel has also permitted door-to-door campaigning by small groups of up to five people.
