Digital Desk: Union Minister and Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy declared on Monday that if the BJP comes to power in the state, Hyderabad would undergo a name change to 'Bhagyanagar.' Reddy justified the proposal by citing previous instances where cities like Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta were renamed.

While speaking to the media, Reddy questioned the relevance of the name 'Hyderabad,' asking, "Who is Hyder? Do we need the name of Hyder? Where has Hyder come from?" He emphasized that the BJP government if elected, would remove 'Hyder' and rechristen the city as 'Bhagyanagar.'

Reddy pointed out that the BJP had not renamed Madras to Chennai; it was done by the DMK government. Drawing parallels, he questioned why Hyderabad couldn't follow suit when cities like Bombay became Mumbai and Calcutta transformed into Kolkata.

"We will completely change all those which reflect the slavish mentality if BJP comes to power," Reddy asserted. He mentioned that the BJP would seek the guidance of intellectuals in the decision-making process. 'Bhagyanagar' translates to the 'city of fortunes.'

This announcement aligns with similar sentiments expressed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during his Telangana poll rallies, advocating for the transformation of Hyderabad into 'Bhagyanagar' for a better destiny and the re-establishment of Mahabubnagar as Palamuru. The proposal is likely to spark debates on the historical and cultural implications of renaming cities.
