Digital Desk: At the World Athletics Championships on Saturday, Avinash Sable qualified for the medal race in the 3000m Steeplechase event. The athlete finished third in Heat 3 and had a time of 8:18:75 to qualify directly for the final event. Sable will participate in the event's medal race for the second time in a row at the international championship. While Ethiopia's Hailemariyam Amare finished first (8:18:34), Evan Jager of the United States of America finished second (8:18:44) in a close race in Heat 3. 


Sable had a solid start to the race and had taken the lead after the first 1000 meters, but he soon dropped behind and at one point was in sixth place with only 400 meters remaining. However, the Indian made a comeback and took third place to qualify automatically for the final.


Sable had additionally earned a spot in the Doha World Championships final, where he had placed thirteenth. 


As anticipated, Soufiane El Bakkali, the current Olympic champion, won Heat 1 (8:16:65), and Lamecha Girma, an Ethiopian, won Heat 2 (8:19:64). 


Other Indian competitors on Day 1 of the Championships included Priyanka Goswami, who placed 34th in the women's 20-kilometer racewalk, while Sandeep Kumar, who had a dismal performance, placed in 40th in the men's event.
