In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated World Press Freedom Day. This proclamation followed a recommendation made in 1991 during UNESCO's twenty-sixth General Conference session. World Press Freedom Day is celebrating its 30th year this year.

African journalists originated the concept of World Press Freedom Day during a UNESCO session in Namibia in 1991. They wished to call attention to the critical role that the press plays in supporting democracy, as well as to the numerous hazards that journalists suffer while performing their duties.
