    Assam: Flood situation remains alarming; IMD forecasts heavy rainfall

    Digital Desk: Assam's flood situation remains alarming, with 18 districts affected as of Monday.


    Heavy rainfall in the state caused problems for more than 30,000 people.


    While there have been no deaths as a result of the floods, several bridges and highways have been swamped, as well as embankments were damaged, according to reports.


    However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast very heavy' to 'extremely heavy' rainfall in various districts till Thursday (June 22).


    The IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall in districts like Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, and Bongaigaon.

    According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) data, people have been affected in Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Cachar, and Kamrup Metro districts.


    As reported by the IMD, Assam has received 99.1 mm of rainfall in the last five days, which is 5mm more than normal.


    As many as 30,729 people in 444 villages throughout the state are affected by the floods, with some evacuating their houses to seek refuge in relief camps.


    According to ASDMA data, 25 relief camps have been set up in seven districts, and the state government has asked that the remaining districts keep them ready.


    People have been advised to check the weather in their areas via SMS and TV before stepping outside. 


    The night ferry service between Guwahati and North Guwahati on the Brahmaputra has been discontinued due to rising water levels.


    The ASDMA report states that embankments in three regions—Biswanath, Nagaon, and Nalbari—have been partially damaged.


    Infrastructure, including PWD roads, schools, government offices, houses, and other structures, has been damaged in 11 districts, including Kokrajhar, Darang, Goalpara, and Nalbari, among others. According to authorities, damaged embankments are being repaired.


    The major rivers in Assam, including the Brahmaputra and the Barak, are running below the danger level.
