IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah is more likely to lead India in 5th Test series if Rohit Sharma fails to recuperate soon

Rohit Sharma is not likely to appear for the Birmingham test that has been rescheduled.

Digital Desk: On Saturday, June 25, Rohit tested positive for Covid, and he has been isolated ever since. If India's captain Rohit Sharma cannot recover in time from Covid-19, Jasprit Bumrah will likely captain India in the rescheduled fifth Test, which will take place in Birmingham and begin on July 1.

The team's management has informed Bumrah, who was appointed India's Test vice-captain in South Africa earlier this year, that he will serve as stand-in captain for the fifth Test.

Notably, Bumrah will lead India in the game's longest format, becoming the first fast bowler to do so since the outstanding Kapil Dev.

The decision regarding Rohit Sharma's availability will be made the night before the Test match. On Thursday, Rohit will go through another round of Covid-19 testing. Still, it's unlikely he will be ready for the eagerly anticipated 5th Test, a continuation of the series from the previous year.

Notably, India was captained by Rohit Sharma during the four-day warm-up match against Leicestershire, which began on June 23. Rohit batted for India in the first innings and partnered with Shubman Gill to open the scoring with 25 runs. He didn't, however, come out to start India's innings in the second innings, which raised questions.

As per BCCI's report on June 25, Rohit was isolated at the team hotel in Leicestershire after his Rapid Antigen Test for Covid-19 yielded a positive result.

The fifth Test, scheduled to be played in Manchester, was postponed due to Covid-19 concerns in the Indian camp in September 2021, leaving the Test series against England unfinished. Rohit was India's leading scorer in that series. Rohit scored 368 runs after hitting a hundred and two fifties.

However, Rohit was prepared to captain India in a foreign Test match for the first time. Rohit led India to a 2-0 sweep of Sri Lanka in a home Test series before the Indian Premier League in 2022 after taking over as India's full-time Test captain earlier this year.
