Digital Desk: Allegations regarding alleged Pakistan links involving Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi have resurfaced, with an ongoing investigation reportedly bringing his wife Elizabeth’s past associations into focus.

According to claims made during the probe, Elizabeth was employed with an organisation in Pakistan between March 2011 and March 2012. During this period, she is alleged to have had close associations with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, described as an influential Pakistani national with links to Pakistan’s military establishment.

Investigators have also cited the circulation of photographs on social media showing Gaurav Gogoi with officials from the Pakistan High Commission. It has been claimed that in 2015, Gogoi led a youth delegation to the Pakistan Embassy, an image that reportedly prompted further scrutiny after initially being suspected as morphed.

Ali Tauqeer Sheikh has been described in reports as a frequent commentator on issues such as the NRC, “love jihad,” and the Delhi riots, often critical of India through media platforms. Officials claim that Sheikh deleted several social media posts after the Assam Police initiated an investigation. Records cited in the probe allegedly show that Sheikh visited India 13 times between 2010 and 2013, often accompanied by high-level Pakistani officials.

The investigation further alleges that Elizabeth worked for LEAD Pakistan for one year and later with LEAD India in Delhi, but continued to receive her salary from Pakistan. During questioning, a senior official of LEAD India reportedly stated that since Elizabeth was paid from Pakistan, she was not under the control of LEAD India.

Claims have also been made that Elizabeth advised Sheikh that it would be difficult to continue working with the Indian government after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power, and that she shared a 45-page report with him. Investigators further allege that Elizabeth maintained a bank account in Pakistan, a detail they claim was not disclosed in Gaurav Gogoi’s election affidavit. However, Elizabeth reportedly did not respond when questioned about the account.

According to records cited by investigators, Elizabeth worked with LEAD Pakistan from March 18, 2011, to March 17, 2012. Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan reportedly took place in December 2013, around 21 months after Elizabeth had left Pakistan. It has also been alleged that no photographs of Gogoi’s Pakistan visit were shared on social media.

Officials further claimed that during her tenure with LEAD India, Elizabeth travelled to Islamabad six times. They have demanded clarity on whom she met and the nature of her activities during these visits, stating that the public deserves transparency on the matter.
