Digital Desk: Today, a powerful earthquake measuring between 7.4 and 7.5 magnitude struck off the northern coast of Japan near the Sanriku region, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning and emergency advisories.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at around 4:53 PM local time of Japan, at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres beneath the seabed, increasing the risk of tsunami activity. The tremor was widely felt across northeastern regions, including Iwate Prefecture.

About 40 minutes after the quake, a tsunami wave measuring around 80 centimetres (31 inches) was recorded at a port in Kuji. Government have warned that waves of greater height remain possible along affected coastal areas.

Emergency services have urged residents in vulnerable coastal zones to evacuate immediately and move to higher ground as a precautionary measure. Officials continue to closely monitor offshore tsunami activity amid ongoing risks.

Transport services have also been impacted, with bullet train operations between Tokyo and Aomori suspended, along with several local rail services in the affected regions.

As of now, there are no confirmed reports of major damage or casualties, though authorities remain on high alert as the situation develops.
