Digital Desk: As Rongali Bihu, the most cherished festival of Assam, approaches, its vibrant spirit is resonating far beyond India’s borders, with celebrations lighting up global cities.
In Chicago, the Assamese diaspora (NRI) marked the occasion in advance on Saturday due to the absence of an official holiday. The event was organised by the Assam Association of Greater Chicago, bringing together members of the community from across the region to celebrate Bohag Bihu with enthusiasm and cultural pride.
Participants relished traditional Assamese delicacies such as pitha and laru, danced to the rhythmic beats of Dhol, Pepa, and Gogona, and immersed themselves in the festive spirit. The celebration highlighted a strong emotional connection to their roots, even while living far from home.
This year’s programme also paid tribute to renowned Assamese artist Zubeen Garg. The cultural lineup featured a wide range of performances, including children’s and senior chorus, Husori, Sattriya dance, instrumental music, dance and song performances, and solo acts, with enthusiastic participation from attendees.
The event was graced by distinguished guests such as Dr. Rebecca Amato, Director of Teaching and Learning at Illinois Humanities, and Dr. Monica Felix, Executive Director of the Chicago Cultural Alliance.
The celebration concluded with a lively Mukoli Bihu, where participants came together to dance and revel in the festive spirit, showcasing the enduring vibrancy of Assamese culture on a global stage.
